Cai Mep – Thi Vai: Vietnam’s Premier Port Hub for Global Trade

The Ascending Power of Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port Cluster

The Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port Cluster is rapidly solidifying its reputation as a world-class international seaport, marking its significance not just in Vietnam but across global maritime logistics. In 2024, the port cluster achieved a remarkable throughput of approximately 152 million tonnes, capturing 34% of Vietnam’s total container volume. This impressive growth underscores the port’s pivotal role in international trade and signifies the trust that global partners place in this essential shipping hub.

    Strategic Maritime Logistics Hub

The bustling activity within the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port Cluster is transforming the maritime logistics sector in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Following the merger of Ba Ria – Vung Tau and Binh Duong provinces into HCMC in early July 2025, there has been a concerted effort to enhance the maritime infrastructure. This initiative is further bolstered by the ongoing construction project of the Can Gio International Transshipment Port, greenlit by the Prime Minister at the start of 2025. The overarching aim is ambitious: to evolve this cluster into a modern, highly efficient global maritime center.

    Modern Infrastructure and Capabilities

The infrastructure at Cai Mep – Thi Vai International Port is nothing short of extraordinary. It boasts three container berths extending 890 meters in length, alongside three barge berths totaling 270 meters. The 55-hectare container yard is capable of accommodating nearly 51,500 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). The port is extensively equipped with 10 STS quayside cranes, 22 yard cranes, and specialized barge equipment, ensuring seamless handling of the largest vessels in operation today.

As a result of this advanced infrastructure, shipping times for goods moving from the Southern region to international destinations have been significantly reduced, mitigating the previous reliance on transiting through the Port of Singapore.

    Vibrant Maritime Operations

A glimpse into the day-to-day operations at Cai Mep – Thi Vai illustrates the dynamic environment of modern maritime trade. The COSCO SHIPPING ROSE exemplifies this bustling activity, having made a significant call at the Tan Cang – Cai Mep Thi Vai Terminal on October 24, 2023. Similarly, the MSC ALEXANDRA, with a deadweight of 165,908 tons, efficiently loads and unloads thousands of TEU of cargo, representing the scale and capability of operations at this pivotal hub.

The Saigon-SSA International Terminal (SSIT) also plays a critical role, with containers stacked high and ready for efficient distribution. This port cluster exemplifies the intricate web of international trade, where every vessel arrival translates into economic growth and connectivity.

    Infrastructure Connectivity

The Mo Nhat Bridge, a key infrastructure connection, further facilitates trade by linking the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port System to National Highway 51. This 696-meter bridge, with a four-lane cross-section, enhances access to the Phu My 3 Specialized Industrial Park, emphasizing the strategic planning behind the port’s development.

The port is designed to service super-vessels with capacities up to 160,000 DWT, reflecting its commitment to modernity and efficiency. The ongoing investment in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment reinforces its position as one of the region’s most vibrant trade hubs.

Amidst this growth and investment lies a clear vision: the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port Cluster aims not just to keep pace with global maritime trends but to lead them, ensuring that Vietnam remains a vital player in the international trade arena.
