### Vietnam’s Leap into Sustainable Aviation Fuel
On October 15, a significant milestone was achieved in Vietnam’s aviation sector when Petrolimex, the country’s leading fuel enterprise, announced the production of its first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This development came hand-in-hand with a supply agreement signed with Vietjet Air, marking a bold step towards more sustainable aviation practices under the banner of “produced in Vietnam, used in Vietnam.” The initiative is expected to accelerate efforts in decarbonizing the aviation industry, which has increasingly come under scrutiny for its environmental impact.
### Petrolimex’s Innovative SAF Production
Petrolimex Aviation, the specialized subsidiary responsible for jet fuel production, proudly revealed that its Nha Be depot has successfully rolled out SAF. This achievement makes Petrolimex the first enterprise in Vietnam to utilize international blending technology, demonstrating not only technical expertise but also a commitment to sustainability. The entire production process, from sourcing feedstocks to final product development, is managed in-house, creating a complete production pipeline that adheres to rigorous sustainability standards.
Furthermore, Petrolimex Aviation’s SAF production and fueling systems have secured certifications under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification – EU (ISCC EU) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). These certifications align its practices with global norms embraced by over 130 countries, validating the company’s commitment to environmental accountability.
Nguyen Van Hoc, General Director of Petrolimex Aviation, expressed optimism about developing future partnerships with both domestic and international stakeholders, envisioning a collaborative effort toward establishing a “green, safe, and sustainable aviation industry.”
### Strategic Partnerships with Vietjet Air
During the launch event, Petrolimex also solidified its relationship with Vietjet Air and U.S.-based Associated Energy Group (AEG Fuel) through cooperation agreements. As part of this collaboration, Vietjet took delivery of the first batch of 1,200 cubic meters of blended SAF, which was certified with a Proof of Sustainability (PoS) under the ISCC EU. This not only ensures product quality but also promotes verified carbon reduction benefits, highlighting a commitment to sustainability.
Từ Viet Thang, Vietjet’s Standing Vice President, indicated that the airline is aiming for a fleet of 576 modern aircraft and prioritizing SAF adoption within this green fleet. This strategic direction is expected to significantly reduce emissions, contributing positively to environmental protection efforts.
This partnership builds upon Vietjet’s previous achievements. In October 2024, the airline was involved in flights partially powered by SAF in collaboration with Petrolimex Aviation, further highlighting the potential of SAF to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
### Progress Across the Aviation Sector
Vietjet’s initiative aligns with broader governmental goals toward sustainable aviation. Notably, in May 2024, Vietnam Airlines became the first carrier in the country to operate a commercial flight using SAF. That flight traveled from Singapore to Hanoi, marking another significant achievement for the nation’s aviation sector.
Vietnam Airlines has actively engaged in IATA’s carbon emissions measurement program, which provides essential data for the airline to develop strategies to mitigate its environmental impact in the future. This proactive approach underlines the growing commitment within the Vietnamese aviation industry to pursue sustainability.
### Conclusion: A Sustainable Future on the Horizon
The developments from Petrolimex and its collaboration with Vietjet Air are indicative of an evolving aviation landscape in Vietnam that prioritizes ecological responsibility. The adoption of sustainable aviation fuel is a promising step toward not only reducing emissions but also building a sustainable aviation infrastructure that paves the way for future innovations in the industry.
As these partnerships continue to unfold, they could serve as a pivotal model for other countries aiming to transition towards greener aviation practices while harmonizing with global sustainability goals.
