Vietnam’s Groundbreaking Step: Petrolimex Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Vietnam has marked a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable aviation with the introduction of domestically produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by Petrolimex. On October 15, 2023, the company not only unveiled its SAF but also signed a pivotal supply agreement with Vietjet Air, aligning with the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Petrolimex Debuts In-House SAF Production
Petrolimex Aviation, the sector of Petrolimex responsible for jet fuel, announced its successful production of SAF at its Nha Be depot. This achievement makes Petrolimex the first company in Vietnam to achieve mastery in international blending technology, equipping it with the capability to produce SAF fully in-house.
From sourcing feedstocks to the final production process, the company has streamlined operations to ensure self-sufficiency. What’s more, Petrolimex’s SAF production and fueling systems are certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification – EU (ISCC EU) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This adherence to global standards demonstrates Petrolimex’s commitment to quality and sustainability.
Nguyen Van Hoc, the General Director of Petrolimex Aviation, expressed pride in this innovative endeavor. The international certification reinforces the company’s capabilities in SAF production and paves the way for potential partnerships aimed at fostering a greener aviation industry.
Vietjet Air’s Commitment to Sustainable Aviation
As part of its sustainability efforts, Vietjet Air has secured the first purchase of SAF, taking delivery of 1,200 cubic meters of blended fuel that is certified with a Proof of Sustainability (PoS) under ISCC EU. This initiative showcases Vietjet’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint while meeting increasing international demand for environmentally friendly flight operations.
Viet Thang, Vietjet’s Standing Vice President, emphasized the airline’s forward-looking approach, highlighting its order of 576 modern aircraft equipped to prioritize the use of SAF. This decision reflects Vietjet’s commitment to significantly cutting emissions while contributing positively to environmental preservation.
Historically, Vietjet had previously operated two flights partially powered by SAF in partnership with Petrolimex Aviation in October 2024, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the aviation sector.
A Broader Aviation Landscape in Vietnam
The introduction of SAF into Vietnam’s aviation sector is part of a larger strategy to enhance the sustainability of air travel. In May 2024, Vietnam Airlines made headlines by becoming the first carrier in the country to operate a commercial flight using SAF, traveling from Singapore to Hanoi. This pioneering flight not only demonstrated the viability of SAF but also underscored the growing commitment of Vietnamese airlines to embrace green technology.
Additionally, Vietnam Airlines has joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) carbon emissions measurement program. This participation will help the airline establish a foundational baseline to explore future emissions mitigation strategies, further solidifying its role in Vietnam’s push toward sustainable aviation.
Support from International Partners
The supply agreement between Petrolimex and Vietjet extends to collaboration with the U.S.-based Associated Energy Group (AEG Fuel). This partnership will bolster Petrolimex’s capabilities in distributing SAF beyond Vietnam, potentially tapping into overseas markets and expanding the reach of sustainable aviation practices.
As Vietnam navigates its journey towards sustainability in aviation, the commitment from major players like Petrolimex and Vietjet promises a significant reduction in emissions. With SAF estimated to reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel, the implications for the environment are profound.
By embracing technological advancements and forming strategic alliances, Vietnam is poised to not only transform its aviation industry but also contribute to a global movement towards reducing the environmental impact of air travel. The groundwork laid by Petrolimex and Vietjet reflects a vital shift towards a greener future in aviation, promising both economic and ecological benefits for the country.
