Vietnam’s Durian Exports Experience Significant Recovery – Lang Son News

Vietnam’s Durian Export Boom: A Closer Look

Vietnam’s durian trade is thriving, showcasing the nation’s rich agricultural potential and the strategies being implemented to enhance its global standing in fruit exports. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the period from May to July witnessed a remarkable surge in durian exports. During these three months, the country exported 7,745 batches of fresh durians, totaling over 207,000 tonnes. This volume is more than 10 times higher compared to the initial four months of the year. In addition, there was also a noteworthy increase in the export of frozen durians, with 560 batches weighing nearly 16,000 tonnes, marking a significant rise of 64.3%.

Collaborative Efforts for Growth

This impressive growth can be attributed to the concerted efforts of local governments, businesses, and farmers. Since recovering from previous challenges, Vietnam’s durian export market has regained dynamic momentum. The collective ambition to tap into both existing and emerging markets is driving this success. Farmers have also taken to high-tech farming methods, evident in places like Sakura Farm in Khanh Hoa province, which focuses on sustainable durian cultivation.

Ensuring Food Safety with Cadmium Mapping

A crucial step to sustaining this growth trajectory lies in ensuring the safety and quality of the produce. As part of this commitment, the Director of the Plant Production and Protection Department, Huynh Tan Dat, has announced plans to develop a cadmium contamination map for durian-growing areas. This systematic approach aims to tackle potential contaminants that could hinder the reputation and safety of Vietnamese durians in international markets.

The cadmium mapping initiative is seen as pivotal in meeting international food safety standards, particularly in high-demand markets such as China, the US, the EU, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Not only does it target maintaining the industry’s presence in China, but it also seeks to open new gates in premium markets.

Digital Integration for Enhanced Risk Management

To ensure transparency and effective tracking of conditions in durian cultivation, the results of this mapping will be digitized and integrated into digital management systems. This will provide authorities, businesses, and farmers with easy access to essential information, empowering them to proactively prevent risks and ensure quality control throughout the supply chain.

The first phase will involve surveying major durian regions, with a current focus on the Mekong Delta, as previous data indicates that the southeastern and Central Highlands regions are relatively clear of contamination issues.

Soil Improvement Initiatives

Alongside the mapping initiative, efforts to improve soil quality will also play a crucial role. Strategies will include the use of organic fertilizers and the addition of lime to raise soil pH levels, working towards reducing heavy metal contamination, particularly cadmium. Introducing biological products to limit the absorption of these metals by durian plants is another innovative solution being considered.

By adopting these practices, Vietnam’s agricultural sector aims to not just enhance the health of its durian crops, but also bolster the safety and quality of its exports.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Vietnam capitalizes on its natural advantages and implements robust strategies to fortify its market position, the outlook for its durian exports appears bright. The blend of cutting-edge agricultural techniques, focus on safety and quality assurance, and a commitment to sustainable practices positions the country to become a formidable player on the global stage for this beloved fruit. While the journey is ongoing, the groundwork being laid today promises a fruitful tomorrow for Vietnam’s durian industry.
