Vietnam aims to complete 1,188km of expressways in 2025

Vietnam is accelerating its national expressway expansion, with 1,188 kilometers of expressways set for completion in 2025, as part of its broader goal to reach 3,000km of expressways nationwide.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently chaired a hybrid meeting involving representatives from 44 provinces and cities to discuss key national transport projects. During this meeting, he underscored the importance of infrastructure development as a critical driver of economic growth. This emphasis on transport connectivity aligns with Vietnam’s ambitious GDP growth target of at least eight percent by 2025.

At the heart of this initiative is the expansive expressway project. The Vietnamese government is determined to enhance public investment in not only expressways but also major airport and port infrastructures, which together aim to foster both national and regional development.

The expressway expansion is one facet of a broader infrastructure blueprint that includes an additional 1,000 kilometers of coastal roads. These developments will facilitate smoother transport and logistics across the country, significantly improving the efficiency of trade. Key airport projects, such as Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province and the T3 terminal at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, are also part of this expansive vision.

According to the Ministry of Transport, construction is currently underway on 1,188 kilometers of expressways, with a targeted completion date set for 2025. Notably, 16 of these projects stretch over a combined length of 786 kilometers and are on track for timely completion, with some showing the potential for finishing 3-6 months ahead of schedule.

However, not all projects are progressing smoothly. Twelve remaining projects, covering 402 kilometers, are facing significant challenges, particularly concerning land clearance and material supply. These hurdles necessitate intensified effort and cooperation from various stakeholders to align with the ambitious 2025 deadline.

In response to these challenges, Vietnam has been proactively addressing bottlenecks in its infrastructure projects. The Ministry of Planning and Investment has concluded appraisals for the Tan Phu-Bao Loc expressway, which will link Dong Nai to the adjacent Lam Dong Province. Additionally, it is providing guidance to Tuyen Quang Province regarding necessary project investment adjustments.

To tackle material supply shortages, especially in the Mekong Delta, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has issued guidelines for using sea sand in construction. This initiative aims to ensure that material availability does not impede project timelines.

Moreover, the Ministry of Transport has approved adjustments for the Ben Luc-Long Thanh expressway project, which further connects Dong Nai with southern Long An Province. It has also submitted a proposal for the high-speed north-south railway project and finalized adjustments for phase one of Long Thanh International Airport, reflecting a holistic approach to infrastructure development.
