Vietnam’s largest private conglomerate, Vingroup, has marked a significant milestone by commencing construction of an ambitious Olympic sports urban complex in southern Hanoi. Spanning over 9,171 hectares, this monumental project represents a total investment of approximately VND 925 trillion (approximately US$38 billion), making it the largest urban development initiative in Vietnam’s history. The complex is set to cover 11 communes, namely Dai Thanh, Ngoc Hoi, Nam Phu, Thuong Tin, Hong Van, Chuong Duong, Thuong Phuc, Binh Minh, Tam Hung, Thanh Oai, and Dan Hoa.

The project is meticulously designed with four distinct sub-zones, each aimed at creating a world-class sports and service hub. This integrated urban area is projected to enhance Hanoi’s reputation as a global destination for culture and athletics, meeting the stringent requirements necessary to host prestigious events such as the Asian Games and the Olympic Games.
At the heart of this development is the iconic Trong Dong (Bronze Drum) Stadium, situated in Sub-zone B. Encompassing over 73 hectares, this FIFA-standard venue is designed to accommodate 135,000 spectators, positioning it among the largest stadiums globally. Its groundbreaking design features the world’s largest retractable roof and pays homage to Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage. Vingroup projects a completion date for the stadium in August 2028.

In line with the project’s vision, the master plan outlines a cohesive ecosystem spanning the four zones. Sub-zone A is envisioned as a new urban district, developed under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model, which will act as a major transport hub connecting the city to the sports complex. Meanwhile, sub-zones C and D will incorporate sports-focused urban residential areas and service spaces that will include extensive training facilities and event venues. This integrated approach aims to create a continuous landscape for elite competition, athlete training, and tourism services, establishing Hanoi as a major player on the global sports stage.
