Vingroup Breaks Ground on $38B Olympic Sports Urban Complex in Hanoi

Vietnam’s largest private conglomerate, Vingroup, has officially kicked off construction on a groundbreaking Olympic sports urban complex in southern Hanoi. Spanning over 9,171 hectares, this ambitious project boasts a total investment of approximately VND 925 trillion (equivalent to US$ 38 billion), solidifying its status as the largest urban development initiative in Vietnam’s history. The complex will encompass 11 communes, including Dai Thanh, Ngoc Hoi, Nam Phu, Thuong Tin, Hong Van, Chuong Duong, Thuong Phuc, Binh Minh, Tam Hung, Thanh Oai, and Dan Hoa.

The Olympic sports complex is structured into four distinct sub-zones, designed to elevate Hanoi into a world-class sports and service hub. This integrated urban area is a strategic move to enhance Hanoi’s reputation on the global stage, positioning it as a prime destination for cultural and athletic events. This project aims to meet the stringent requirements necessary to host prestigious competitions like the Asian Games and the Olympic Games.

At the heart of this monumental development is the Trong Dong (Bronze Drum) Stadium, which is located in Sub-zone B. Covering more than 73 hectares, this FIFA-standard stadium will have a seating capacity of 135,000, making it one of the largest stadiums worldwide. The design features a remarkable retractable roof inspired by Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage. Anticipated for completion by August 2028, this stadium is set to become a cornerstone of the complex.

The master plan of the project is meticulously crafted to create a synchronized ecosystem across its four zones. Sub-zone A will serve as a new urban district, developed under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model. This element ensures seamless connectivity between the city and the sports complex, which is vital for interaction and accessibility. Sub-zones C and D are dedicated to sports-focused residential and service spaces, featuring large-scale training facilities and multi-purpose event venues. This design guarantees an ongoing landscape for elite competition, athlete training, and tourism services, fostering a vibrant community around sports.
