Transforming Vietnam’s Industrial Parks into Green Energy Hubs

Introduction: A Vision for Sustainable Growth

Vietnam is on a mission to transition its traditional industrial parks into sustainable green industrial parks. This initiative is a key component of the National Green Growth Strategy (2021-2030) and aims to align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. As global resources dwindle, embracing a circular economy is becoming increasingly vital for nations worldwide.

    The Drive for Green Production

The transformation from traditional to green industrial parks hinges on promoting green production practices. This involves efficient resource use and facilitating energy and by-product exchanges among enterprises within the parks. By nurturing these interactions, Vietnam seeks to foster a collaborative environment that prioritizes sustainability and resource efficiency.

    Mobilizing Private Sector Investment

One of the remarkable outcomes of this transformation is the mobilization of significant investment from the private sector. By adopting green industry solutions, Vietnam is not just enhancing energy security, but also boosting sustainable development and resilience against climate change. Furthermore, there’s an evident improvement in the quality of life for communities surrounding industrial parks.

New Ecological Industrial Parks on the Horizon

As part of this long-term vision, Vietnam plans to establish new ecological industrial parks that meet modern design and planning requirements. The goal is to attract investment projects that leverage eco-friendly production processes, ensure efficient resource utilization, and prioritize waste reduction and the reuse of materials and energy.

    Success Stories of Ecological Transformation

Several industrial parks have already made strides in becoming ecological environments. Notable examples include:

    • Khánh Phú Industrial Park
    • Gián Khẩu Industrial Park (Ninh Bình)
    • Hòa Khánh Industrial Park (Đà Nẵng)
    • Trà Nóc Industrial Park 1 and 2 (Cần Thơ)

These parks collectively host approximately 72 enterprises that have embraced roughly 900 energy-saving and clean production solutions, leading to substantial savings of nearly VNĐ76 billion annually, alongside reduced consumption of electricity, water, and fossil fuels.

    Collaboration with Global Organizations

Collaboration with international organizations like the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) plays a crucial role in this transformation. The partnership has streamlined the replication of eco-industrial park models in cities such as Hải Phòng, Đồng Nai, and Ho Chi Minh City. As of October 2023, the project has supported 68 businesses in three major industrial parks—Deep C, Amata Đồng Nai, and Hiệp Phước—optimizing resource efficiency and implementing approximately 300 sustainable solutions.

    Addressing Challenges in Development

Despite the positive advancements, Vietnam faces several challenges in developing these industrial parks. Current planning often lacks a cohesive vision, leading to ineffective investment attraction and the inefficient use of land. Furthermore, traditional parks in nearby areas may not collaborate effectively to enhance competitiveness.

The Role of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)

As Vietnam aims to attract high-quality foreign direct investment (FDI) for economic growth, preparing industrial infrastructure becomes increasingly urgent. Investors are now more selective about environmental sustainability, making the development of eco-industrial parks a crucial step in enhancing Vietnam’s appeal in the global market.

    The Path Forward

The road ahead requires Vietnam to continue innovating its policies and regulatory frameworks. By adjusting its goals for developing industrial parks and economic zones, the nation can better respond to evolving global standards and priorities. This adaptability is essential for achieving the broader socio-economic development strategy and ensuring a sustainable future for industrial development in Vietnam.
