New Eco-Friendly Shipping Route Introduced in Vietnam for Quicker Deliveries

Launch of Mekong Express: A Game-Changer for Vietnam’s Cargo Transport

DP World, in an exciting partnership with the VIMC Container Lines Joint Stock Company (VIMC Lines), has unveiled the Mekong Express, a groundbreaking coastal and river transport service designed to revolutionize cargo transit in Vietnam. This innovative service promises to slash cargo transit times by a staggering 70%, a benefit that could reshape the logistics and trade landscape in the region.

A Faster Route: Reducing Travel Time

The Mekong Express service connects the inland port of Cai Cui with the deepwater port of Cai Mep, operating twice a week. Traditional transport along this route would typically take around 48 hours but thanks to the new service, the journey has been cut down to just 15 hours. This is a significant improvement, as it allows cargo to move more swiftly, meeting the urgent demands of the market.

Shorter Distances, Cost Savings, and Environmental Benefits

The conventional route stretches approximately 367 km; however, the newly established coastal path reduces this distance to about 200 km. This not only expedites delivery times but also results in a more cost-effective solution for cargo shippers in Vietnam. According to DP World, the service offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional transport methods, with anticipated reductions of 60% in carbon emissions compared to road transport.

    Versatility in Cargo Handling

Designed to handle both dry and refrigerated containers, the Mekong Express is equipped with a significant capacity, accommodating several hundred twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per voyage. This versatility is essential for meeting the diverse needs of shippers, particularly those dealing in perishable goods or time-sensitive cargo.

    Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, there are plans to expand the service further, with potential additional stops at the Saigon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT) managed by DP World and Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port, which is under the Vietnam Maritime Corporation. This expansion will not only enhance connectivity but also bolster the efficiency of the already transformative Mekong Express.

    Technological Innovations for Real-time Monitoring

In addition to improving transit times and reducing costs, the Mekong Express incorporates cutting-edge technology. Equipped with real-time cargo tracking and carbon monitoring systems, this service aims to keep shippers informed and engaged throughout the shipping process. Both DP World and VIMC Lines have set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2026, utilizing advanced technologies to monitor and minimize their environmental impact.

    Strengthening Economic Connectivity

The launch of the Mekong Express is set to enhance connectivity between two of southern Vietnam’s economic heavyweights: the Mekong Delta Key Economic Region and the Southern Key Economic Region. Together, these regions are instrumental in driving much of the country’s industrial output and exports. By significantly improving transportation efficiency between these areas, the service is expected to fuel growth across various sectors of the economy.

    Commitment to Integrated Supply Chains

Glen Hilton, CEO and managing director of DP World Asia Pacific, emphasized the company’s commitment to developing a seamless, integrated supply chain ecosystem in Vietnam. With increasing importance as a market for trade in the Asia Pacific region, the Mekong Express meets a vital need for a more efficient and reliable shipping option that supports broader economic development throughout the country.

By delivering this innovative service, DP World and VIMC Lines are not just changing the landscape of cargo transport; they are also paving the way for a more sustainable and interconnected future in Vietnam. This endeavor promises to elevate the efficiency, reliability, and environmental responsibility of logistics in the region, marking a pivotal moment for both companies and their customers.
