Strengthening Nepal-Vietnam Economic Ties: A New Chapter
Celebrating a Milestone
On December 12, representatives from Nepal and Vietnam gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between their two nations. This significant milestone serves not only as a moment of reflection but also as an opportunity to forge stronger economic ties. Amid thriving discussions in Hanoi, Nepali businessmen articulated their vision for deepening bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in sectors ripe for investment.
A Call for Investment
At a conference hosted by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nepali entrepreneurs emphasized the immense potential for investments in various sectors, including tourism, hydropower, and agriculture. They presented Nepal’s unique advantages as an emerging market, appealing to Vietnamese investors to consider opportunities in the Himalayan nation.
The Voice of FNCCI
Chandra Prasad Dhakal, the President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), took center stage during the discussions. He emphasized that while celebrating 50 years of relations, it is vital to transition from diplomatic talks to tangible economic actions. “There is great potential in the field of economic cooperation between the two countries,” he stated, underscoring the need for Vietnamese investments to enhance bilateral trade.
Promising Market Dynamics
Though Nepal is often overlooked, Dhakal pointed out that the country boasts a strong market for exports. He urged Vietnamese investors to explore opportunities in handicrafts, tea, coffee, and medicinal herbs, highlighting that these products have a promising demand in both domestic and international markets. He noted that the two nations’ economies could complement each other remarkably well, creating a cooperative dynamic that benefits both sides.
Enhancing Foreign Direct Investment
One of the focal points of Dhakal’s address was the evolving environment for foreign direct investment (FDI) in Nepal. He reassured potential investors that the country is implementing investment-friendly laws, streamlining licensing processes, and improving customs and tax administration. “The government is also keen on ensuring the security of foreign investments,” he asserted, further emphasizing the conducive atmosphere for investment.
Exploring Tourism Opportunities
With tourism being a burgeoning sector in Nepal, Dhakal invited Vietnamese investors to explore possibilities in hotels, resorts, and adventure tourism. The growing interest in wellness centers and other regional accommodations sets the groundwork for fruitful collaborations. He also extended an invitation for the Vietnamese delegation to participate in FNCCI’s upcoming annual general meeting, encouraging them to experience Nepal’s business landscape firsthand.
Strengthening Economic Partnerships
Nguyen Quang Vinh, the Deputy Executive Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expressed enthusiasm about fostering an economic partnership with Nepal. He recognized the untapped potential for cooperation in trade and investment, reiterating the need to build on existing relations. “Although there hasn’t been great cooperation so far, we see a future filled with potential,” he remarked, voicing support for continued dialogues and partnerships.
Diplomatic Support for Investment
Supporting this initiative, Dhan Bahadur Oli, the Nepali Ambassador to Thailand and Vietnam, called upon Vietnamese investors to capitalize on the numerous opportunities in Nepal. “It is the perfect time to strengthen our economic ties, especially as we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations,” he highlighted. His assertion underscores the commitment from both nations to explore and utilize the synergies in trade and investment.
Fostering Future Cooperation
The discussions between Nepali and Vietnamese businessmen reflect a shared ambition to bridge gaps and enhance economic collaboration. Both sides are keen to not only maintain the diplomatic momentum built over 50 years but to translate it into actionable partnerships that can lead to mutual growth. As the landscape shifts and opportunities unfold, the future of Nepal-Vietnam relations promises a rich tapestry of collaboration and success.
