Tokyo-based Mitsui E&S Co. has freshly inked a significant contract with Petrovietnam Phuoc An Port Investment & Operation JSC (PAP) for the delivery of 21 container cranes. This deal is pivotal for the upcoming Phuoc An port, a key infrastructure project funded by the Vietnamese government that aims to bolster the nation’s logistics capabilities.
Details of the Crane Package
The comprehensive package encompasses five Ship to Shore Gantry Cranes, known as Mitsui-Paceco Portainers, and 16 state-of-the-art Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes, referred to as Mitsui-Paceco Transtainers. This combination underscores a push toward more environmentally friendly operational practices, reflecting the growing emphasis on sustainability in port management and logistics.
Phuoc An Port: A Strategic Development
Phuoc An port is being constructed as the first container terminal situated in the Nhon Trach district of Dong Nai province, strategically positioned as a manufacturing hub in southern Vietnam. Covering an extensive area of 183 hectares, the port is designed to accommodate six container berths along with four general cargo berths.
The site will be equipped to handle vessels of up to 60,000 DWT (Deadweight Tonnage), featuring impressive capacity limits of 2.5 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) annually and 6.5 million tons of general cargo yearly. Such capabilities place it as a vital asset for the region’s growth.
Location Advantages
Strategically located between Ho Chi Minh City—the country’s primary economic engine—and the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport, slated to open in 2025, Phuoc An port is set to become one of the premier logistics hubs in Vietnam. This prime location enhances its potential to serve as a pivotal connector between the industrial heartland and global shipping routes.
Progress and Expansion of Crane Deliveries
As part of its operational rollout, the delivery record for Phuoc An port has already included nine units of Mitsui-Paceco Portainer and 25 units of Mitsui-Paceco Transtainer. Additionally, four more Portainers and nine Transtainers are scheduled for handover in September 2024, illustrating a rapid build-up of essential equipment.
Over the past decade, Mitsui E&S Co. has made its mark in the Vietnamese market by delivering a total of 26 units of Portainers and 132 units of Transtainers, capturing the largest market share in this sector.
Recent Developments
In a parallel effort, Mitsui E&S Co. also garnered attention last October by securing an order for six Ship-to-Shore Gantry Cranes and 24 Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) Cranes from Port of Hai Phong JSC. This initiative supports the ongoing development of a container terminal in the Lach Huyen area of Hai Phong, further solidifying the company’s presence in Vietnam’s rapidly evolving port landscape.
As the Phuoc An port project unfolds, it is clear that the collaboration between Mitsui E&S Co. and PAP represents a significant investment in Vietnam’s infrastructure, poised to transform the logistics and shipping landscape in the region for years to come.
