American global investment firm KKR has strategically positioned itself in the Vietnamese market with investments across various sectors. Currently, KKR’s portfolio includes notable companies such as EQuest Education Group, KiotViet, Saigon Medical Group, and Vinhomes, illustrating the firm’s commitment to tapping into Vietnam’s growing economy.
Investment in EQuest Education Group
In 2021, KKR made a significant move by investing $100 million in EQuest Education Group. By July 2024, KKR, through its affiliate Equinox II Pte. Ltd., secured a stake of 54.78% in EQuest, valued at over VND923 billion (approximately $36.33 million). EQuest has established a comprehensive education ecosystem encompassing bilingual K-12 schools, universities, vocational colleges, English training centers, and cutting-edge educational technology solutions. This diverse portfolio reflects KKR’s interest in nurturing the education sector in Vietnam, which is vital for the country’s future workforce.
KiotViet: A Technology Leader
Another venture for KKR in Vietnam is KiotViet, a subsidiary of the software company Citigo. Founded in 2014, KiotViet provides essential business management software, including POS systems, inventory management, and CRM services. In 2021, KKR led a $45 million Series B investment round, marking its entry into Southeast Asia’s tech growth arena. With over 300,000 clients in the retail sector, KiotViet serves as a prime example of KKR’s focus on innovative technology solutions that drive efficiency and growth in business operations.
Saigon Medical Group: Healthcare Expansion
KKR’s investment reach also extends to the healthcare sector through its stake in Saigon Medical Group (MSG). In January 2024, KKR became the largest shareholder in MSG, taking over from Heliconia Capital, backed by Temasek Holdings of Singapore. Though the investment details remain undisclosed, KKR’s involvement is expected to enhance MSG’s expansion capabilities, improve patient care, and solidify its operational base across Vietnam. This investment underlines KKR’s strategy to partake in critical sectors that improve the quality of life for the Vietnamese population.

Vinhomes and Real Estate Ventures
In addition to its investments in education and healthcare, KKR has stakes in real estate giant Vinhomes (VHM), although the exact value of these holdings remains undisclosed. In September 2021, Viking Asia Holdings II Pte. Ltd., associated with KKR, reduced its stake from 5.5% to 4.6% after selling 31.96 million VHM shares, yet still generating a remarkable profit of about VND1.07 trillion (around $42.1 million) over a year. This demonstrates KKR’s aptitude in navigating the complexities of the real estate market and realizing substantial returns.
Historical Engagement with Masan Group
KKR’s connections to the Masan Group illustrate a broader investment heritage in Vietnam. Since 2011, KKR has invested upwards of $159 million for a 10% stake in Masan Consumer. Subsequent investments continued in 2013 and 2017, eventually leading to an exit in 2018. KKR’s engagement with Masan underscores the firm’s methodical approach in leveraging strategic partnerships to maximize growth while also preparing for timely exits to yield profits.
Prime Minister Meeting and Future Outlook
On December 12, 2024, KKR co-owner David Petraeus met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, discussing Vietnam’s potential as an investment destination. Highlighting Vietnam’s political stability, improving infrastructure, and strong international relations, Petraeus emphasized KKR’s long-term commitment to enhancing its investment footprint in the country. Since 2011, KKR has channeled over $2 billion into Vietnamese enterprises, positioning itself not just as an investor but as a pivotal player in enhancing Vietnam’s economic landscape.
As KKR continues to explore opportunities in Vietnam, its diverse investments reflect a deep understanding of the local market dynamics and its potential for growth across multiple sectors. This commitment positions KKR not only as a major investor but as an integral partner in Vietnam’s ongoing development narrative.
