Key roads to Long Thanh Airport ahead of timeline.

Long Thanh Airport is rapidly transforming into one of the most significant aviation hubs in Southeast Asia. Currently bustling with construction activity, the airport’s development signifies a robust commitment to enhancing air travel in Vietnam. Key infrastructural components, such as the terminal, runway, air traffic control tower, aircraft apron, and fueling area, are already underway. These foundational elements will play a crucial role in the airport’s capacity and functionality.

The first phase of Long Thanh Airport is targeted for completion by the end of this year. Upon opening, it is expected to handle around 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually. This initial capacity is a crucial step towards meeting the growing demands for air travel in the region, showcasing Vietnam’s ambition to position itself as a leading destination for both tourists and business travelers.

Spanning an impressive 5,000 hectares, Long Thanh Airport comes with a hefty price tag of approximately VND 336.63 trillion, which translates to about $13.2 billion. Such a significant investment underscores the vital role that this infrastructure project will play in enhancing Vietnam’s connectivity, economic growth, and international standing. The scale of the project reflects both the current and anticipated future demand for air travel in the region.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the airport is slated for completion by 2035, adding another passenger terminal and runway. This expansion will effectively double the airport’s annual capacity to 50 million passengers and accommodate 1.5 million tons of cargo. Such ambitious plans stand to significantly alleviate congestion at existing airports and cater to the projected growth in air travel as Vietnam’s economy continues to expand.

By 2030 to 2040, Long Thanh Airport has set its sights even higher, aiming to handle up to 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo each year. This forward-thinking strategy acknowledges not only the increasing flow of domestic and international travelers but also the growing trend of global trade that necessitates efficient air freight solutions.

The Integrated transport network around Long Thanh Airport is also taking shape. Roads T1 and T2 are designed to enhance connectivity between the airport and major highways leading to Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Ba Ria–Vung Tau, and other southern provinces. This infrastructure will significantly improve accessibility, making the airport not just a travel hub but also an integral part of the region’s economic framework.

In particular, T1 will serve as the main route for transporting machinery and equipment necessary for future construction phases at Long Thanh. The careful planning of these transport arteries underscores the commitment to ensuring that the project not only meets current demands but is equipped for future growth and operational efficiency.
