Vietnam is currently leading Southeast Asia in e-commerce expansion, with retail e-commerce product sales anticipated to surpass VND 310 trillion ($12.6 billion) in 2024, swelling by 35% year-on-year.

    In 2023, the logistics of Vietnam’s five leading e-commerce platforms—Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, and TikTok Shop—demonstrated impressive capacity with 2.2 billion product units successfully delivered, marking a 52.3% increase from 2022, the highest growth in the last three years.

    However, the same year experienced a slight setback; the number of shops receiving new orders via e-commerce platforms dropped by 1.3%. This decline has been attributed to economic instability, global supply chain disruptions, and heightened competition, as well as certain businesses struggling to identify target markets and develop viable operational plans.

    As we look to the future, several emerging shopping trends are capturing attention, particularly in the realm of livestreaming and multi-channel sales, which are generating substantial revenues for professional sellers.     Social media commerce is also reshaping how people discover and purchase products, with forecasts suggesting strong continued growth in this domain throughout 2024. A Meta study highlighted that 45% of consumers often make purchases based on product information encountered on platforms such as Facebook or Instagram, while 20% directly buy products via Facebook.

    Technological innovations like artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) are enhancing the online shopping experience by personalizing interactions and simplifying search functionalities. The integration of video content is projected to dominate online shopping engagements in 2024, with brands leveraging livestreaming to facilitate real-time interactions with customers.

    The omnichannel sales approach is cited as an effective strategy for businesses aiming to broaden their customer base and maximize revenues in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Representatives from multi-channel sales management platforms note a clear trend towards diversification, with 55.4% of sellers now utilizing at least two channels, including both physical and online storefronts. E-commerce platforms remain a favored choice, often seeing a preference for TikTok Shop in previous years.

    Industry analysts have identified multi-channel selling as crucial for mitigating challenges posed by economic fluctuations, rising retail space costs, and evolving social media marketing dynamics. The most prevalent trends for this year highlight the significance of diversifying sales channels, with a noted focus on social media sales, e-commerce floor activity, and the gaining popularity of TikTok Shop.

    The expansion of sales channels and innovative sales tactics—including the integration of Shoppertainment and Edutainment—are emerging as significant trends for 2024. Analysts anticipate that cross-border sales, particularly from official stores in China and South Korea, will gain traction in Vietnam.

    While optimism abounds regarding market growth in 2024, the reality remains that not all businesses will benefit equally from these developments. Historical patterns from 2016 to 2018 suggested that online transitions yielded substantial profits. However, recent shifts have leveled the playing field, with strategic clarity becoming essential for long-term success in e-commerce.
